It was a cold, foggy morning ❄️near Paradise, New Zealand. As we prepared for our ride, the horses seemed frozen to the frosty ground, not moving at all like statues in the paddock. I realised then that this morning was too cold for work 😂
I wanted to capture the cold, frosty feeling but with the warm colours of the foggy sunrise. Using only 2 colours and white to mix.

This is my second entry to the Archibald Prize. I painted The Orangutan Project’s founder Leif Cocks. It’s a cause that I’ve been supporting for a few years now, they do fantastic work for conservation of animals and forests. This painting represents the breakthrough of Leif and his team’s achievement of releasing captive born orangutans into the wild.

For some reason it always seemed like something I would do “one day”. 2022 was my first attempted entry into the Archibald Prize. With covid lockdowns across the country and travel restrictions in place, it made sense to paint myself as the subject wearing a mask. Do you still recognise me in my mask?

A single giant Baobab tree can live for thousands of years, but a large percentage of them have died over the past fifty years. In this painting the last remaining Baobab managed to produce a seedling before dying off. New growth giving hope to future life. In an instant of ignorance someone steps onto the new plant as if it didn't even exist, just because it happened to be in their way. Remaining life continue to suffer the consequences of our ignorance.

I wanted to create a statement about the plight of wild Orangutans. They face an uncertain future, quite possibly extinction within the next 50 years as a result of rapidly declining rainforest habitat being removed by big industries for palm oil, wood pulp, timber and much more. Protection measures are failing and the orangutans, along with pangolins, sun bears, tigers and elephants are all in critical danger of being lost forever.
The Orangutan in this painting is reaching out to grasp onto anything to avoid being sucked into the vortex of nothingness.

Athyrium enjoys the taste of the cool, revitalising water flowing into her bloodstream. The trees dipping their roots into the edge of the riverbank remind her of the importance of the water.
